DEXA Bone densitometry or bone density scanning is an enhanced form of X-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. This quick non-invasive procedure can also be effective in tracking the effects of treatment for osteoporosis and other conditions that cause bone loss. These scans are most often performed on the lower spine and hips.
Bone density scans are the most accurate method for diagnosing osteoporosis and are performed in the Bryan Radiology Associates office. The National Osteoporosis Foundation states, “Eighty percent of those affected by osteoporosis are women.” That’s why at Bryan Radiology Associates we can schedule bone density scans with an annual mammogram to increase convenience for our patients.
The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force recommends a bone density test at least once for all women age 65 and older. Medicare will cover one bone density screening every two years or once every year after osteoporosis has been diagnosed.
Scheduling and Preparation: Bone density scans may be scheduled through our central scheduling department by calling 979-776-0929. Our scheduling representative will review any special instructions or preparation required for the examinations.
